Grace Mugabe - Second Amai Mugabe

Grace Mugabe is Zimbabwe's first lady. She is married to President Robert Mugabe who is also the first secretary and president of Zanupf party in Zimbabwe. Their wedding was perharps the most expensive wedding in Zimbabwe and was held in 1996.

In Zimbabwe the wife to the president is known as Amai (mother) to the nation hence Grace Mugabe is known as Amai Mugabe. The first Amai Mugabe was Sally Mugabe who died in 1992 of kidney failure.

Grace was born in July 1965 and was previously married before marrying Mugabe. She is very controversial and is generally less liked than the late Sally Mugabe. In fact for many in Zimbabwe if Sally Mugabe were alive Zimbabwe might have avoided the very dark period 2000 to 2010 due to alleged Mugabe's poor decisions. Unlike Grace, Sally was largely viewed as a true mother figure, mature and calm.

Apart from controversies to do with extravagant living and shopping, Grace Mugabe is also a naturally friendly person who frequently mixes with the lowest members of society. She often donates goods and goodies to opharnages and old peoples homes. In fact she has a huge project underway to house homeless children in Zimbabwe.

In 2007 into 2008 just before the controversial March 2008 election, Grace Mugabe astonished the nation by appearing frequently with her husband at campaign rallies ferociously attacking Morgan Tsvangirai and the opposition in general. She even appeared at some rallies alone vigorously campaigning for her husband. This became a suprising barometer of the temparature in Zanu PF and what was politically stake in a failing Zimbabwe economy.

Predicatably, her husband was beaten in the election by Morgan Tsvangirai and instantly unleashed a campaign of untold terror on the population of Zimbabwe leading to a rejected June run-off election of the presidential poll.
